A growing city, and a hot one
St. George is one of Utah's fastest-growing areas; the Utah Geological Survey describes it as one of the state's fastest-growing regions for more than two decades, and Utah Tech University enrolled 13,167 students in fall 2024. Many people move here, and many move in summer, when the heat is extreme. The cooperative station read 117°F on July 10, 2021, tying Utah's all-time record. This guide covers planning a move, protecting belongings and what to do if something goes wrong.
Step 1: Choose a mover
- Ask for an in-home or video survey and a written estimate.
- Ask what is included and what could change the price.
- Ask what protection the mover offers for damage and how claims work.
- Ask for references from recent local moves.
Step 2: Plan for the heat
- Start early in the morning in summer.
- Keep water for everyone, including the crew.
- Ask the mover how they handle heat breaks.
- Make sure the new home's air conditioning is on before arrival.
Step 3: Protect heat-sensitive belongings
A truck in the sun gets very hot inside. Move these yourself in an air-conditioned car if you can:
- medicines;
- electronics and computers;
- candles, vinyl records, photographs and artwork;
- plants and pets;
- food, wine and cosmetics.
Step 4: Document
- Photograph furniture and valuables, including existing marks.
- Make a box inventory by room.
- Carry jewelry and documents yourself.
Step 5: Moving day and delivery
- Walk through with the crew lead.
- Check the inventory at loading and delivery.
- Note damage on the paperwork before signing.
Step 6: If something goes wrong
1. Note damage or missing items on the delivery paperwork, with photos. 2. Contact the mover in writing and ask about the claim process and deadline. 3. Keep copies of everything. 4. Ask your homeowners or renters insurer what it covers.
Students and short moves
Students and renters often move small loads. Even for a short move, get the price in writing and keep a list of what was moved.
Step 7: Settle in
Rekey the locks, update your address, check that the AC and water softener are working and keep the mover's paperwork until claims are settled.
Records
Keep estimates, contracts, inventories, photos and claim correspondence together.
Packing tips that prevent claims
Pack heavy items in small boxes and light items in large ones, wrap dishes individually and label each box with its room and contents. Ask how the mover's protection treats boxes you packed yourself.
Storage in the heat
If you need storage between homes, ask whether the unit is climate controlled. A non-cooled unit in summer can damage electronics, photos, wood furniture and anything with adhesive or wax. Check the unit's lock and access hours, and keep an inventory of what is stored.
