Moving in Sioux Falls
Minnehaha County is South Dakota's most populous county, and most moves within it happen in either a short, busy summer season or a long winter. Each brings its own problems.
Winter moves
NOAA's engineering weather data for Sioux Falls gives a 99% winter design temperature of −11°F and a 50-year ground snow load of 40 pounds per square foot. A winter move takes more planning. Clear and treat driveways, sidewalks and steps at both homes before the truck arrives. Ask the mover to lay floor protection, because snow and grit will come in on every trip. Ask what their policy is if a storm makes moving day unsafe, and whether rescheduling costs anything.
Freeze-sensitive belongings
In a truck at −10°F, some things are damaged: liquids, paint, houseplants, electronics with batteries and screens, musical instruments, and anything with water in it. Move those yourself in a heated car if you can. Let electronics warm to room temperature before turning them on, so condensation inside them can dry.
Freeze-thaw
NOAA lists an average of 75 freeze-thaw cycles a year in Sioux Falls. Late winter and early spring bring days that melt and nights that refreeze, which leaves steps and ramps glazed with ice in the morning. Plan for that if you're moving in March or April.
Summer storms
On the night of September 10–11, 2019, severe thunderstorms brought straight-line winds of 80 to 100 mph, and three brief EF-2 tornadoes touched down within Sioux Falls. Summer moving days can be interrupted by severe weather. Ask the mover how they protect furniture in rain and what they do if a storm warning is issued during the move.
Summer heat
NOAA lists a 1% summer design temperature of 91°F. Start early on hot days, and keep heat-sensitive items out of a closed truck for long.
Before you book
Get written estimates from at least two movers based on a walk-through, in person or by video. Ask whether the price is fixed or hourly, how travel time is billed, and what's charged for stairs, long carries and heavy items. Ask what liability coverage the mover provides for damage and how claims work. Read the bill of lading before you sign it.
